Ride Report - Sunday 28th May

Spring is turning into summer, the bluebells are past there best, the farmers crop of oilseed rape have flowered and the daylight hours are stretching from before 05.00 to past 21.00. Time to dust off your two-wheeled (and for a few three wheeled) steed and take to the road. This encouragement is for all the fair weather cyclists; My CTC (The National Cyclist’s Organisation) colleagues get out on their bikes all year round. “There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing”

No need for waterproof clothing last Sunday, I took my jacket and light over shoe covers just in case. I like to enjoy my bike rides, so I pack lots of things into my bag and pockets, just in case, as the boy scouts motto “Be Prepared”

It was my turn to lead; we met at the Council House at the usual time of nine o’clock and set off along National Cycle Route 52, heading south, through Riversley Park, past the Pingles, over Donithorne Avenue and along The Wem Brooke way before re-joining the road on Marston Lane. Shilton was the alternative meeting point, Wellesbourne airport and the village of Loxley our destinations. We headed south, past Coombe and through Brandon woods, as we pedalled along Brandon Marsh Lane we greeted a much larger group of cyclists going in the opposite direction, it was our club colleagues from the Coventry Section, with the aid of modern communication aids, we would rendezvous with them later.

We paused for refreshments, and full English breakfasts at Ryton Pools before heading south again. I know a direct route to Wellesbourn, John suggested a more “scenic route” and Jo wanted to “get the miles in” so we went via the scenic route! We arrived at Wellesbourne airfield and enjoyed a variety of refreshing drinks and slabs of bread pudding whilst watching the activities on the airfield, light aircraft, too many to identify coming and going, and a mighty Vulcan bomber standing sentinel. Not enough time to visit the museum, I had spoken with Kevin of the Coventry Section and the afternoon refreshment stop was Hunningham Hill Farm shop. We arrived just after four o’clock as instructed; to find the crumble with ice cream is only part of the lunch menu! Never mind there was a selection of flavours of ice cream in the farm shop, “can we manage a litre of raspberry between us?”

Next week it is Alan who will lead us on Sunday to Castle Ring, the alternative meeting point at Hartshill. The Wednesday evening ride will meet at the Council House at 19.00 and finish at The Plough, Mancetter, Chris is the leader on Thursday, meeting at Dobbies garden centre, Mancetter at 10.30.

We are introducing a series of six Saturday rides this summer, meeting at 10.00 is outside Nuneaton Library. The first is on the 3rd June and being part of The CTC’s “Women’s Week-end” will be led by Carol and Marion. Though I suspect if somebody does “a how to mend a puncture” demonstration at the refreshment stop, it will be one of the men!
If you are interested in any of the above rides, then please come along and give it a try. For more information, contact Paul Scott on Tel. 024 7639 7002 or Ian Bonner on 024 7637 3851 or by e-mail icbonner@yahoo.co.uk See also http://www.ctc.org/ or http://ctcnuneaton.blogspot.com/

Bike Ride For All Sat 24th June 2006

You are invited by Nuneaton Cyclists’ Touring Club to join us on a morning introductory bike ride to nearby Market Bosworth. It’s not too far, and will mainly be on off road routes and quiet country lanes.

Saturday 24th June 10.00 am

Meeting at Nuneaton Library

Cycling is an effective method of transport. It’s good for you, cheaper that going to the gym and allows you to see a great deal more of the countryside and your surroundings than you would in a car. It’s also an ideal way to meet new people.
